Would thumbnails be redundant on a site where the photos are displayed like this?

Yes, because there are no thumbnails.

If your large images load fast, then thumbnails are redundant....
I once heard an agency art buyer say that she liked photographer's websites to be as simple as possible, so she could reject photographers faster, anyone whose site is too slow and she rejects before she even sees the images.... She said she liked thumbnails, but sometimes she said she'd reject a photographer based on the thumbnails...
She said she often has 3 or 4 photographer's websites open at the same time, if one of them plays sound, it's closed immediately too...

Haha, what a mindset. REJECT! REJECT! REJECT!
I agree with the music thing. I have never been to a site where it added anything.

they would be redundant there, the images are small enough and many of them load fast enough that you can just scroll through the images themselves.
It's all about loading speed and how much a user can see in 2 seconds
