smoke a blunt and create original art.
dont copy other logos already made.
be inspired by life and look at things outside of the idea itself.

1. Shotgun Research / Mind-mapping
2. Initial Sketching / Experimentation
3. Refinement / ProductionI debate about looking at other logos for 'inspiration'. I find that the less I look at others' identity work the more likely I am to come up with something original.
However, I will say that depending upon the client I will look at how the current market they're in is using an identity and depending on the client will try to guide them into a direction that either takes them outside of the market(in a good way) or puts them on par with it.

I research, then sketch, then spank 450% of the alloted budget by drawing them all up and doing countless iterations simply because I love it.
This is why I live in a box and brown-bag it every day.

i take my initial $3k deposit (standard half up-front)...
... then I start a competition on 99designs.com for a hundred bux... choose the top 8 designs... let the client pick one... get the second half of the fee and extend my middle finger.

The Brief » Research » Sketching & Conceptualising » Typography » Positioning » Illustration » Presentation » Approval » Application
Something like that!

1) start sketching on paper
2) jump to illustrator
3)if that doesn't work for you..... all of the above

istock. lol.

LOTS of thinking. The possibilities are endless, although those that will work are few. Sketch extensively, pick the best three, and do them in Illustrator and show them to the client. Refine their choice, sell, and bypass QBN altogether. :-)

draw a few scamps, pick one. Play with it in illustrator until it's unrecognisable. Make a completely boring version and one that's so way out it makes you puke.
Show to the client/boss, and then roll out the "medium" one.
the end.

When i design a logo, i read the brief, maybe i make a quick mindmap, I might look at some other logos. And then start doodling. When i have a couple of ideas, i go over in Illustartor, and start experimenting.
For some reson, logos always take me ages to make (decent ones).
How do you do it (better)? Logos are a category of their own, when it comes to design work, IMO...
Thanks,
Jan
