I'm going to get crucified for this, but I think Miyazaki really dropped the ball on this one.
Plotless, bland, and actually really, really creepy. Come on, a freaky guy dressed in a pinstripe suit who rises out of water and drags a boy down just to force him to marry an infantile fish-frog-girl, lest the world be consumed by typhoons and the ocean itself.
This can't even hold a candle to other Studio Ghibli movies.

It did seem quite weird but weird enough that I still want to see it....

i thought that steampunk one was awful.
mononoke hime and spirited away are the best from them

As a bit of a Ghibli fan, I've seen all Mayazaki Snr's stuff and reckon it was his son who 'dropped the ball' on the last movie, Tales From Earthsea (although great score) and he was merely picking up the pieces after that mess... overall, imo, Ponyo is utterly beautiful but the ending was completely shite and really underwhelming! I'm sure the English audio version will really fuck it up though.

great hidden gems throughout (maybe thats just in my head...). Strangely enough, I just got through watching a few episodes of Carl Sagan's Cosmos series again and it ties into it wonderfully. Ah the mysteries of life,. Miyazaki knows what's what! and that goes for all his movies.
*goes back to reading his Tezuka comic
