Obviously it wouldn't be as rugged or manly, but...

there are already a lot of offroad navigation apps on the itunes app store, some of them are pretty good.

have exactly that Garmin and recently got the iphone. went off hiking in the middle of nowhere. The Garmin is fantastically reliable. Accurate, and most of the base map topos (once you load them) are really good at finding old roads, trails and features of the land.
Pulled open Maps on the iphone at one point to compare and though it's really cool to see the sat images of where I was, the GPS apps on the iphone are not as quick or seemless as the Garmin.
Not sure if this is always true, but damn GPS on the iphone kills my battery life. I don't think it would survive on a 3 hour hike.
I always upload/download tracks on the garmin to Google Earth. EASY.

so what was the decision on this one?
Thinking of either upgrading to a 3G iPhone w/ GPS or just buying a portable GPS for the car and hiking.
Anymore suggestions?
