how common is it that a company will not pay for travel expenses?

Very rare but in these times, it would be common.

Usually if they really like you and want you, they will pay.
I flew in for interview, I insisted on paying my own because I had 7 agencies that day after that.
Usually if they want to talk to you whole day, I would say let them pay.

I would say this is not that uncommon, especially with the economy. Companies primarily do this when they are desperate to fill a void in their team, and cant find someone local to hire, if they are just hiring, and you want the job from a different state, and they don't "need" you, then chances are you need to get out there on your own to meet with them.
- if they cant find someone local, wouldn't they be more willing to pay for someone to fly outwhodovoodoo

Try and 'wow' them with this line:
"No, no, no, no. How about I fly YOU guys here? Yes, all of you."- haha... i like the "Yes, all of you." re-iteration...ideaist
- that would put them in a weird spot!whodovoodoo

i guess my whole deal is they are not that small of a company, but i understand that they have local candidates they are looking at as well. i already agreed to pay my own way, i didn't want them to say never-mind over travel accommodations. also they only really gave a few days notice.

last year I spent about 500euros for a trip from france to england, spent 8hours in the train, 1 night in a hostel, 2 hours at the train station.... for a 20min interview.
I paid everything.
I though and I still think it was worth it.
2weeks after that interview I spent 2weeks there, with paid accomodation. best time I've had in an agency.I usually don't mind about paying travel expense for an interview ; spending X00euros to get a job which will reward you about X0000euros yearly looks like a good deal to me.
