It doesn't have to be completely fixed either. Get a fixie with a flip flop hub so you can coast as well.
I don't know why people get so worked up. Do we all have to ride the same bikes?

I just got the '07 model of this bike on Saturday... its great. Rode 23 miles like it was nothing Sunday morning.

What you should be looking for is a cyclocross bike. You can fit large enough tires to ride firetrails and jump curbs and it rides great on the streets also.
If you plan on riding single-speed or fixed, then this is what I recommend (and what I've been wanting to own for quite a while).
