Actually people act like this is unanswerable but it's easy. Chicken.

both!

the egg precedes the chicken by millions of years.
Glad that's settled.

While we are at it, can we finally sort out why it crossed the road?

The question is based on the idea that there always needed to be another chicken to have the egg and vice versa.
But assuming you believe evolution the first chicken, must have been born from a bird that was very similar to a chicken, but not exactly similar.
So, the chicken came first.
Or wait, maybe that means the egg.
I'm confused now : (

It's gotta be the egg.. the first genetically complete 'chicken' will be defined in the DNA in the egg.
But the question is still stupid, since you couldn't say where non-chicken stops and chicken started, its too gradual.

lol. damn it. I just knocked over my beer.

Well the chicken was scared of the cock, therefore the chicken couldnt impregnate egg.

look. a dino with chicken wings fucked a dino with drumstick legs. Mommy dino laid an egg with a chicken inside.
ANSWER: the egg.

This is really simple stuff if we are to believe the pretty solid theory of evolution.
Quite clearly the egg came first otherwise where the hell did the chicken come from?
Natural selection and 'lucky' positive mutations is the name of the game in evolution so the first chicken had to have come from an egg.
Simple simple simple.

what came first the dinosaur or the egg?
