So, PowerPoint is apparently shit. "Never use PowerPoint for your presentations", said someone in the book of Adrian Shaughnessy. If not Ppt, what then?

Its the Powerpoint mentality that is shit, clip art, lots of reveals, memos rewritten as slides.
Garr Reynolds is God, look at his site http://presentationzen.blogs.com… get his book

Wow. What a SHOCKING thing to say. Clearly I don't want to be left out - I better buy his book.
Or, alternatively,
make your presentation in any media-, in any software, in any way you feel best suits your need. Just try not to make it sucky.
Disable the starsweeps and whatnot in powerpoint/keynote/other if that helps you resist the urge to make things tacky and poor. Also, listen to Comicsans (the poster above).

software shouldn't matter really, if you create a well thought out presentation, I mean you shouldn't really be using the transition effects in any of these apps anyways, then you'll be golden...
stagger the points you're trying to make, it's all about the build up and not trying to cram everything onto one page..
On some level, a great presentation comes down to being able to tell a great story..
- popovich0
neue75, you are right about the story. that's the essence.
but sometimes, you don't need to talk much, you need to hand over and show and make it comprehensive and clear. for that I would be normally using PowerPoint (on Windows), but it would be strange, if this is the only option.anything from Adobe, maybe? Adobe Presenter seems like a plugin for Ppt, huh?
- not if you're on a PC I'm afraid, I think ppt is your safest bet..neue75_bold

I use a PDF... only because I know how to do it, it's quick an I have alot of control

as edward tufte says, the problem with powerpoint is that more often than not the presenter is using it as a safety blanket to hold on to while they speak. The fact the audience can see this means they don't concentrate on the speaker but on the screen instead.
Better to show a series of images or movies and talk between them. I'd advise few or little text or diagrams:- <<<d_rek
- PPT is not the end itself but merely a means to it, great presentations are more so based around the speaker than what's on screend_rek
- on screend_rek
- yup..neue75_bold

nothing wrong with a pdf.
- I take it your presentations are always masterpiecesd_rek
- eh? i wish. - full screen mode, wipe or push transition. does the job. bit of interactivity if you want.indian_pole

lol, leave it to a designer to let their techno-fetishism get in the way of the actual idea. way to miss the point, popovich!
What do you use instead of Powerpoint? A piece of paper. The best presentations shouldn't even need powerpoint. This isn't a question of either/or. It's a matter of clear communication, cutting out anything but the basic idea.
I sometimes wonder how you believe this world turned before powerpoint. "But how did they show off their bullet lists?" you must be asking yourself.
God, and you lot are supposed to be designers. Neu75 is the only one that gets it.
- popovich0
spokenword, thanks. but no, I am not bothering myself with "how did they show the bullet lists". and I am all for a piece of paper and doodles.
but you cannot be serious when saying that one should not care about the tools he or she uses. go take an axe and present your idea in wood then. not all the time do A1 sheets work, the ppt may not always fit as well. I was just asking about the tools, that's it.

pdf and ppt is more safe in the business world right now, many marketing ppl expect something you left behind after the presentation, so they can discuss with thier colleagues in the other country or to their boss as well.

You're asking about the tools of COMMUNICATION. Of relating to other people.
Here's what you should use instead of powerpoint: Brevity, empathy, and clarity.
You're welcome.
