Any good free software out there to hide icons on osx from the tool bar?

Assuming you mean the Menu Bar, and are talking about the stuff on the right, it depends on what you want to take off. If they are Apple things like Sound and the little Flag, just hold Command and drag them off. Other items like Date and Time can be turned off via the Sys. Pref. Not sure about Spotlight, I think that can't be turned off.

Change the folder's "Display As" to grid or list. Alternatively, create an alias to Downloads folder and put it in Dock instead of the folder.I always add Applications folder to Dock, set it to list view - I get good old Windows application list this way.
