Is there a way of creating a displacement map that behaves like an adjustment layer so it can automatically warp anything placed on a layer below it?
I thought there was but I forgot you have to apply a displacement map to a layer manually which isn't ideal as I need to supply a psd that someone with basic photoshop knowledge can simply add layer and save out a jpg.
Hmmm...
Any advice would be much appreciated lads & ladies

In Photoshop, not that I know of. You only have a handful of adjustment layers, mostly color correct related.
In After Effects, however, you can assign potentially any effect or filter to an adjustment layer. Not that that helps, but just pointing that out.
- Cheers for pointing it out anyhow mate. Any response is appreciated.ShaneHolley

aye can you not alt click inbetween the layers and it does just that, it makes a wee arrow anall.
- Might be a way around, but not sure it's going to give you the "displacement" you want. Worth a shot though.harlequino
- Just tried it out of curiosity. Still affects color, not a real warp. But maybe play around with it anyway.harlequino

sort of, make the photo layer you want to effect, a smart object, apply the effect to the smart object as a smart filter(automatically does this if the option is available) Then someone could go into the smart object put in whatever photo they wanted, save changes to the smart object, and go back to the root PSD and the Effect should be applied to the new smart object.

how about giving them an action? any idoit can press f9...

rusty_ace & Projectile, cheers for that. Though the issue I've got is that the document I'm supplying will be placed on various images of differing res, scale and dimensions. If I use a set action or smart object, they'll only be relative to the document size and dimensions that I give it to them as. So once they drag my artwork into a different document, it's all gonna be out of sync. My other thought was to use a smart object and alter the canvas size according to what the image might be, but this results in the displacement disappearing.
What a bunch of balls eh!
