LONDON (Reuters) – Organic food has no nutritional or health benefits over ordinary food, according to a major study published Wednesday.
Researchers from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine said consumers were paying higher prices for organic food because of its perceived health benefits, creating a global organic market worth an estimated $48 billion in 2007.
A systematic review of 162 scientific papers published in the scientific literature over the last 50 years, however, found there was no significant difference.
"A small number of differences in nutrient content were found to exist between organically and conventionally produced foodstuffs, but these are unlikely to be of any public health relevance," said Alan Dangour, one of the report's authors.
"Our review indicates that there is currently no evidence to support the selection of organically over conventionally produced foods on the basis of nutritional superiority."
The results of research, which was commissioned by the British government's Food Standards Agency, were published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Sales of organic food have fallen in some markets, including Britain, as recession has led consumers to cut back on purchases.
The Soil Association said in April that growth in sales of organic products in Britain slowed to just 1.7 percent in 2008, well below the average annual growth rate of 26 percent over the last decade, following a plunge in demand at the end of the year.

i dislike the word 'foodstuffs'.

I had always thought people where more concerned with how the food was grown

What about the pesticides in the non organic foods?
- ukit0
So no difference between my food at a local co op and a McDonalds cheeseburger then? Party on.

" What about the pesticides in the non organic foods? "
that's not what the study addressed and people are already mistaking the word "nutritional" with "healthy"
nor did it address the impact of conventional farming on wildlife, biodiversity etc. Nor did it address the positive employment context of organic production i.e. more labour required = more jobs.
- Was just going to raise that point myself, lowimpakt. +1cabbas

I didn't think anyone believed organic food was 'healthier'. I thought people bought organic because of the more rigorous govt. standards, pesticide use and way in which it was grown.
- Much of the stuff sold as "organic" is not certified organic. There's no FDA agency to do it.Mimio
- unless it has this on it.... http://www.trautman.…bulletfactory
- Ah very cool. about time. thanks http://www.ams.usda.…Mimio
- the FDA is is failing the people of the USA, so thank goodness there is no "FDA" of sorts for organic foods.Point5

organic farming is great if you can afford it, but it should by no means replace industrialized agriculture altogether. it's not very efficient or scalable. there's lot's of hungry people in the world that just wouldn't be able to eat without modernized industrial agriculture.
- Yeah, the industrialized world is doing a GREAT job feeding the starving 3rd world.BRNK
- if you notice, i said industrialized agriculture. but you don't.johndiggity

I think you will find conflicting data if you look around more. But beyond the "which is healthier for you", organic food tastes MUCH better. Especially organic meat and vegetables. If you don't believe me go and try some.
- yes and some people think hummus and tofu taste good too. it's all subjective. now gimmie some chicken nuggetskona
- I used to think that too, but if you have tasted fresh organic Chicken or Beef you will never want to go back.designbot

I've never thought that organic foods held a greater nutritional value whatsoever. But I do like the fact that they are grown with less chemicals.
- < that's the real valuekona
- i buy organic chicken and shoot steroids into them before cooking. that way i can control it ya know.kona

Since I live in the states, where food is constantly being experimented through genetic modification, unlike that of europe and japan, I am worried about the outcome of eating genetically modified food. So for the time being, buying organic food seemed to me a viable solution...
- harlequino0
The problem with food labeled as "Organic" is that there are not the same kind of FDA regulations in labeling food as organic as there are for other things. You could have a whole line of products that are heavily processed, full of preservatives, then add one stick of herbs from your garden and you can call that "organic."

isn't this a study from england?
