i have the Panasonic lumix lx3 and it is amazing. Result is as better as my Canon Rebel xti. Only difference is the zoom.
you can also shoot HD video with the lx3.
have fun.

I have the lumix Ix3... its pretty nice shooting during the day... but kinda sux in low light, I'd trade it for a digital SLR

I'm thinking of getting a new compact digital. Can anyone explain to me what the difference is between the GX200 and the GRDII? I don't seem to be able to find anything that describes the fundamental difference between the two and they certainly seem to be very similar in performance, except the cheaper one has the higher mp count.

Horp,
Rand is correct, the GRDII has a fixed lens. Its the newer model of the GRD which was made infamous by the way it compresses the images, rather than giving jpeg smear or noise, it gives an almost grain-like look moreso than any other digital camera.
If you do some reading online you'll read that a lot of Pro's have this camera as their backup digital stashed in their bag.Incidently the GX's and the GRD's are similar in size and shape and will comfortably sit in trouser or jacket pocket without being too unsigltly.
The GRDII came into a lot of flack with the diehard fans of the original GRD as Ricoh had done away with the 'grain-like' compression and opted for the way everyone else does it. A silly move if you ask me. Theres also the arguement that theres more noise on the GRDII than the original as its more megapixels squeezed into the same sensor. Original 9/10MP, Newer 12MP.
The GX100, the camera I have, has a zoom lens and is 10MP.
I wanted to get a digital that would replace my lomo LC-A so was naturally looking at the fixed lens GRD. It was a tossup but in the end having zoom is a good thing.
The results have a slight filmgrain effect but not as much as the GRD.The new GX200 has more megapizels into the same sensor so again its been criticised for having more noise and theyve also opted away from the grainlike compression too.
Great thing about this camera is that you can put on aftermarket lenses. :)
Ive been tempted by the Olympus E-P1 posted above as it promises to be an amazing camera, quite pricey though esp when you get lenses too.
Oh, the GRD with the fixed lens is more expensive because it it a better quality lens. 1 expensive and more perfect lens rather than multiple not as great lenses in the zoom model

I have the R7 and R4, they are both wonderfull cameras, photo quality, etc
but the down points are annoying as hell,
- you can forget low light photos because without a flash they'll be blurry.
- the camera noise is horrendousthese are the only two negative point I have with mine, except that there are wonderfull beast + the macro is fantastic,
now on the subject, i've no Idea how the GR, GX works, I'm probably going to get one once I kill my r7, I'll wait for your comments.Go for it.

No probs Horp, I just knew all that cos I thoroughly researched them both and other cameras before deciding on the GX100.

I dont think the GRDII or I will drop that much in price now that the III has come out. The prices for the lower models didnt change when the current models came out.Read what I said about the GRD original camera above. That camera because of its "grain-like" compression seems to have a bit of a cult following so these cameras hold their value a lot, check out prices on ebay. A worthwhile investment if you could get one for a good price.

my sigma dp1 beats the pants off of my old lumx lx-2. much better noise control, and wayyy better controls. however, it only goes up to iso 800, and is slower than balls

Shitehawke,
Is the pic you are asking about the one with the guy smoking the cig?
Nope, i just did the zooming/blurring in photoshop.
In the photo of the woman pushing the pram, THAT one is using a lomo lens - it's the Lomo LC-A+ Wide Angle Lens. It acts as a VERY fisheye wide angle lens. Good for a bit of fun but very blurry as the edges. You need hood adapters to get it onto the Ricohs. Couple of quid each though. The rest of the photos are just using the standard GX100 lens.
I do have a wide angle Nikon Lens that I use on the camera ALL the time though.

yeah those were all shot from the hip. This camera really did replace my LC-A: the camera that got me back into photography.- Aye kon, it was the smoker and the mother and pram that I thought you were using the lomo lens on. Great shots.shitehawke
