So im looking to experiment with 3D modelling and animation. its new to me so i don't want to spend much cash.
my previous experience goes as far as sketchup, so pretty basic- hence the drive to advance.i know there's blender (www.blender.org) which is open source but have you seen the UI?! fook it would take me years to learn half of what it all does.
im looking at modo 401 (http://www.luxology.com/modo/) a student license is $150 which isn't bad for what it does and i could stretch to that.
so does anyone have any recommendations? very little love from google and suggestions from users is way more valuable than some list on someones badly researched blog article.
ta very much

Rhino for modelling, imo.

if serious about getting into 3d then why not download one of the demos , since you might end up at a shop that works in one of these platforms
lightwave

it depends what you want to do, basic logo animations and character stuff is fairly learnable with c4d, but you you want to get into heavier character and particle effects id recommend either maya or 3ds or xsi

Softimage XSI used to have a $500 licence that was amazing value. Sadly that's gone away with Autodesk purchase and it's 4k or so (same as 3dMax). It's still a good package. Another you might look into is SideFX Houdini which is pretty highly praised and a bit cheaper.

I wouldn't recommend Maya or Lghtwave unless you were serious about making that your everyday profession. If you just want to add 3D to your skills and are not developing a career in 3D, I would recommend Cinema 4D.

maya or max. industry standards.
