How to order a large vinyl collection?

Right, I've gotta spend about a week, sorting out my vinyl collection... Been collecting since I was about 10. Its an beautiful, but messy collection.
I got David Bowie albums sitting with Mighty Diamonds LP's.. Techno and folk, all good music and some rare bits + some odd bits I might not keep or flog on ebay. Its taken me ages to find the room to have them all on display and ready to stick on the decks.
So, I'm at last ready to have a proper system & ordering for easy access. I was thinking to do little divider cards to split genre of music up logically. Waffling, but just cant' work out how I want to order them all, by genre & artist date, or label, era etc? I've got a massive spectrum from jazz, soul, disco, reggae, rock, folk, techno, hiphop, house, beats, scratch tools. This post is really on the off chance that someone has sorted out there vinyl in such a ingenious way.
What do you do?

How about, oh, I don’t know... alphabetical?
- right, cheers for dat!ejectstudio
- Just kidding. My small-ish collection is chronological. The genres tend to still stay together.Zenith_Kudos

I have yet to be able to get all mine in the same spot, when I do I'd go alphabetical.

- iTunes is backed up on a 1TB Time capsule... I bought some of my records from a man like that.ejectstudio

got a stack of those plastic bin dividers from a friend at a shop and did them all alphabetical. it never really worked out that well as a lot of the stuff i had was promo or white label so i had to invent things to file them under if i couldn't work out who the artist actually was.
- Sure, I reckon it's gonna have to be genre then alphabetical then.

but then there are also lots of records that cross genres...

i have mine ordered by genre, then alphabetically. i still reorder it though, because when coming back to a record after a couple of years, i'll feel it belongs in a different genre.

...Album cover color is the only way to order. Light to dark. You are a designer, right?

hey. i organize mine in different ways:
some alphabetically by country then by label
some grouped by styleif you always manage to put them back after listening, you will always remember where to find them regardless of how you organize them. its great that you have enough storage space to organize them from start to finish instead of finding more nooks to stash them, fragmenting the lot.
i recommend that you don't use dividers. save them for the record shops, they will just look ugly in your house.

sell em on ebay like i did.

i'd order it like a record store would, or does anyone even go to those anymore (besides me)

My collection is nowhere near yours, but I took photos of all mine, and alphabetized. I mainly did this for inventory purposes, but it will come handy if I sell it some day. Give it a minute to load: http://therecordsetters.com/viny…
- nice! but no disraeli gears?!armsbottomer
