They picked the wrong cop to accuse of racial profiling.

oh you mean gov't mandated stereotyping isn't all it's cracked up to be?
who knew?

I agree with the police officer on this one.

Just a question - but if the cop had arrested a white man in his own home under the same suspicions, would this have been national news (noteworthy of the presidents comments when there are world problems to deal with) or just the officer saying sorry man, but you did force yourself into the home so from the neighbors vantage point you looked like a burglar.
- all i'm saying is that the cop is right regardless of race he did the right thingshinpo

this whole racial profiling gets thrown around quite a bit.

I don't care what the circumstances are, at first glance it added up. If he just showed his ID without such a chip on his shoulder, it would have been fine. Blame the wife for making the call in the first place.
She said 2 black men were breaking in, and when the cop got there, there was a black man in the house. If she said 2 white guys were breaking in and a white guy was there, I am sure it would have ended the same.
What would you do if you're called to a house and someone matching the description won't show their ID and gets agitated toward you?

he arrested the guy AFTER he knew that he was the homeowner and was not breaking in. it's not illegal to tell a cop he's an asshole and demand ID, it's their JOB to remain cool in those situations.

- Police say Gates at first refused, flew into a rage and accused the officer of racism.version3
- that wasn't the point at which he was arrested though. i'd say they both behaved badly.acescence
- he was arrested after he said he would "talk to [his] mama outside". that was a stupid comment.Gucci
- The cop took it personally, which they shouldn't do. Not defending Gates, but toughen up cop.DrBombay

strange to read what the president may have said though...
what I think we know separate and apart from this incident—is that there is a long history in this country of African-Americans and Latinos being stopped by law enforcement disproportionately, and that's just a fact.
i like you Barack, i really do but I too have been stopped, held, and harassed without reason, only suspicion and i'm white you ignorant bastard

"you know what time it is! give it up! give us the chicken!"

i'm sorry,
what does "he's an expert in profiling" mean exactly?
sounds like the bureaucratic way of saying "i'm not a racist. i have black friends."
- version30
ace, the presidents statement resonates a different sentiment than that of the officers on the scene

Ah FFS, you don't believe blacks/ Latinos/ etc get stopped more often though? Of course they do.
- brandelec0
the moral of the story is.. if you come home and your front door is jammed, walk over to your neighbour's home and ask if you could borrow their phone.

hey i am latino and i can't trust myself! specially blacked out... eveytime i end up 100$ less rich and have no clue where it went or who took it

Bottom line, know your neighbors.

I was locked out once, I hopped my fence and sat on the deck reading while waiting for someone to come home.
So, I hear someone hop the fence and a cop comes bolting around the corner with his 9mm drawn and pointed at my forehead while screaming for me to get down. Needless to say I was scared shitless. But I deserved it, I later thanked my neighbors for looking out for my house.
- you didn't 'deserve it' at all...it was your house. ?mikotondria3
- I meant having the cops called. My neighbors saw a flash of me hopping the fence. They thought I was being robbed.********

ukit, have you seen that crips & bloods documentary? when you have neighborhoods like that growing across the country and a media sensationalizing the events that gets emulated by kids then when you are in predominately black or latino areas it is not profiling when mainly criminals are getting pulled over.
who may not be a whore but you are wearing a whores uniform
dave chappellhave you ever seen banging in little rock? its a doc about mainly Little Rock, AR, it's about white gangs their reason for existence how they survive and how the gang culture was spreading through white suburb broken homes in the southern/eastern states
stereotypes exist for a reason, because people play into them
i'm not racist, i'm cautious, when you play up a thug, pimp, gangster, badass image and look anyhting like one of the 2 black men that have robbed me in my life, experience tells me to be on alert, not the color of his skin but the content of his character as he would like to display to me.
I don't know if you've ever been arrested but i have and i wasn't guilty, thing is that doesn't matter to the police, what matters is the current unknown situation needs known and controlled. you thnk this is the first time someone has told this cop that it was his house and "you're racist"? get out the id, be calm about things and everyting will be okay. you fly off the handle of self righteousness, you're going to end up put in your place no matter who you are. you, me black, white, celebrity, poor
