If you don't want a taxi, walk against the traffic otherwise you will get harassed by taxis and tuk tuks.

I love Thailand, been there a few times and it's superb. Bangkok is a bit mental but love it non the less. If you are more into sightseeing I would recommend going to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, you also have to visit Myanmar when you are there (very cool.)

Pretty obvious but the big night market is good. (Not Pat Pong unless you like table tennis). Get to a kickboxing gig. Very entertaining...

Hey WeLoveNoise,
I've traveled there in two trips totalling about a year. I was last there in November of 2008. Definitely check out Chiang Mai if you have time to sit back in relax in a friendly and accessible, but not overpriced city. Scenery up there isn't as great, but people are less jaded, and it's more authentic.
Let me know if you want specific tips, or give a read through the Thailand posts on my blog. You might get some ideas:

Tourists warned of Thailand airport scam
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world…Don't go in the duty free shop.

"Letters of complaint to the papers here in Thailand make it clear that passengers are regularly detained at the airport for alleged shoplifting, and then made to pay middlemen to win their freedom.
The Danish Embassy says one of its nationals was recently subjected to a very similar scam, and earlier this month an Irish scientist managed to flee Thailand with her husband and one year-old son after being arrested at the airport and accused of stealing an eyeliner worth around £17. "
