and Im not even married..... I called off my wedding which was almost 2 months away.
but... I need one because shes trying to stick it to me.
theres a house involved and a pretty expensive engagement ring involved, plus over 30K invested into another account which Ive been cut off from.yeah, the rest of my summers gonna be fun.

you need a litigation lawyer and since you are not married it will cost you more than what you get back.
- whats the difference between the two? Im not that savvy with the lawimnotadesigner

You need to move as quickly as possible since once things disappear, you have no rights as you are not married.

Forget about the ring, that will be viewed under most laws as a gift.
As for the house and financial assets, that is a legal matter. Seek an attorney ASAP.- gift counts as asset in divorce.********
- best of luck imnotadesigner:)utopian

marriage lawyer deals with where there is an official contract signed.
now what you can get is someone who deals with domestic partnership. if you have lived with someone for a certain period, it counts as a domestic partnership which is same as being married, if you can prove that.
if you declares income dependence, you will have to pay alimony or who ever has the higher income. tread carefully as you can lose more than your house.
and since YOU called off your wedding, you are the petitioner and under domestic partnership, its very hard for the petitioners so most petitioners tend to lawyer up before calling off the wedding.

Sorry I meant to say Common Law, not domestic partner.
Ontario Law
"... common-law partners do not always evenly divide property in a breakup, and the courts have to look to concepts such as the constructive or resulting trust to divide property in an equitable manner between partners. Another difference that distinguishes common-law spouses from married partners is that a common-law partner can be compelled to testify against his or her partner in a court of law."

What qualifies as Common Law Partner
According to the Canada Revenue Agency, as of 2007, a common-law relationship is true if at least one of the following applies:
a) the couple have been living in a conjugal relationship for at least 12 continuous months;
b) the couple are parents of a child by birth or adoption; or
c) one of the couple has custody and control of the child (or had custody and control immediately before the child turned 19 years of age) and the child is wholly dependent on that person for support

So if you lived with her for more than 12 months, you are good as married.

havent lived with her. Bought a house as an investment (and later to live in) back in 05 and we've been renting it since 07. Ive been making $800 deposits every 2 weeks since we got it.
- surely you wrote up a contract for this 'investment', right?monNom

Consult a divorce lawyer first and see where they point you to. You might need a business litigation law
