I have a limited working knowledge of flash, have never built and an entire site in flash but it looks like I'm going to have to learn as my boss wants to add more eye candy to out web work and is upgrading to CS 4. I'm not a developer, just a designer with a basic understanding of web.
Any suggestions on reading material or sites to increase my skill level.

- Agree. gotoandlearn is really good to learn specific things with minimal investment as far as time.mathinc

Learning ActionScript 3.0: A Beginner's Guide by Rich Shupe and Zevan Rosser is a great starting point.
Essential ActionScript 3.0 by Colin Moock is a necessary reference to have within reach.
- I read 20 pages of Colins everytime I took my daughter to cheerleading. Other parents stayed well away....mikotondria3

I personally haven't gone through this yet but I hear it's pretty good. Senocular is definitely someone who knows his shit when it comes to AS.

Oh also, The AS3 Cookbook is really good to have.

I'd also suggest that you start learning AS3 with Flash Builder 4 (which is still in beta, previously Flex Builder). It'll be a bigger investment as far as time goes but the scripting IDE is 200 times better than Flash IDE. Stay away from the timeline as much as possible and instead stick with tween classes, a la, http://blog.greensock.com/tweenl… .
Some good blogs:

http://www.mikechambers.com/blog…Learning this stuff definitely takes time and patience, and depending on how much natural ability you have to absorb this kind of logic it can be a steep and painful learning curve (I have zero natural ability with code so it's taken fucking forever). I'd also recommend you make really good friends with people who know this stuff inside and out, bake them cookies, stop by to do their laundry, find compromising pictures of them with barnyard animals. I know I would have never learned Actionscript without the mentors I've had. Stick with it. Cheers!

AS3 had some design philosophy changes from AS2 and earlier actionscript that made easy things harder, but some hard things easier.... If you're a designer jumping into AS3 as your first coding language, it may feel like learning to swim by jumping in the deep end of the pool, so don't feel like an idiot if you don't get some things, and be aware that your boss may have no idea about how long things will take to do in AS3...
