Max, I'll describe the idea for you. I don't think it will make me seem like a pretentious tosser to potential clients, but of course you're entitled to arrive at your own conclusions.
The promo piece in question is a small perfect-bound book. Printing only 100, digitally. The tentative title is Work = Play. It's basically my portfolio in print for prospective clients only. Much more straightforward than my last promo piece, which got great reviews from design firms (3 job offers) but zero response from potential clients.
The main idea here is that my work is what I do for fun. I think the best work anyone does is that which engages them so much that it isn't a chore, but rather it becomes more like play. The projects I'll show in the book are tangible results of what happens when I find that kind of real enjoyment in my work. The fact that I get paid for it—even enough to support a wife and child—is icing for me, and I consider myself uniquely blessed.
There isn't a whole lot of text, besides short descriptions for each project. I could've sworn I heard or read someone once say something about work vs. play and how the difference is characterized by partial or full involvement. I was going to use it in the book's intro, but I can't seem to find the quote, so I've decided to just write it in my own words.

^ Oh and I'll be sending these to museums, fine & applied arts publishers, non-profit arts organizations, and higher-end design/textile companies like Knoll, Vitra, Corian, InterfaceFLOR, etc.

In my opinion, he only may be truly said to live and enjoy his being who is engaged in some laudable pursuit, and acquires a name by some illustrious action, or useful art.

"What work I have done I have done because it has been play. If it had been work I shouldn't have done it. Who was it who said, "Blessed is the man who has found his work"? Whoever it was he had the right idea in his mind. Mark you, he says his work--not somebody else's work. The work that is really a man's own work is play and not work at all. Cursed is the man who has found some other man's work and cannot lose it. When we talk about the great workers of the world we really mean the great players of the world. The fellows who groan and sweat under the weary load of toil that they bear never can hope to do anything great. How can they when their souls are in a ferment of revolt against the employment of their hands and brains? The product of slavery, intellectual or physical, can never be great." Mark Twain, from http://www.wisdomquotes.com/cat_…
