Kindly calling on the wizards of the board - I'm looking for help with creating a single line animation in Flash that draws out objects and continues. Is there a way to achieve this in code and if so, can you share some pointers.
Hello and thank you!

a better description should be required for starters
Choose one
A. You want a drawing effect for tracing out real world objects
B. You want to make random abstract drawings like flight404.com

A. would be the choice.
I want to take a drawing and mask the drawing making it appear as if the single line is drawing out never ending and in the process drawing out real world shapes.Sorry, but I don't have a good example to show although I've seen it numerous times. I can recall a show on Discovery (How do the do it) that used clips of this kind in between topics. Hope this helps!

You can do this in AE. Not sure why you'd want code to do it.

Lack of skill.
But thaks for everyones input.

yea that's done manually, by putting a mask over the line drawing and animating the mask. It's mind numbingly boring.
You could do it with code, but it's pretty hard. You'd have to have a lot of programming experience. Something like this http://lab.polygonal.de/page/5/ at the very bottom. The code would see the tracing, then generate a mask to animate across that tracing, making sure not to hit any other lines, and all you'd have to do is set some guiding parameters.
I'm sure it was programmed in some other languages, but can't find any AS3 examples.

Right, it felt like a manually labored task. :)
I wish I could just draw a path and have the stroke fill in over a period of time.

trapcode's 3d stroke plugin for AE has this feature. import a line drawing from illustrator o use as the path. then you can change a setting over time that will draw a % of the path. you can also animate the path over time.
then export it as a swf
or in flash, draw your artwork. make an empty movieclip follow that drawing (guide path). use some nice easing here and there. write some script to draw a line each frame from the null objects previous position to it's new position. it'll look like it's drawing it for you.
