It's not essential, but it's nice to have.

I am using it for my main email. I love it. If made to pay I would look for an alternative....a free alternative....probably just go with my host.
$50 - i don't know....

google wants to see money.
ad revenues are dropping massively and offering close to 8gb for a gmail account for free is not exactly cheap for them..

I think it's pretty useful - lets you brand the google apps, and gives you a central way to administer individual accounts. If google decided to start charging I wouldn't pay $50 for it.

It is like Gmail, but with your own domains in email addresses. Plus calendar, docs you can share within an organization. You can add email accounts in these domains for your coworkers/employees/family easily.
You can obviously set up your regular gmail to send from your domain, but it has its drawbacks: very little control over users and aliases and requires forwarding from your old account host anyway.

Ah yeah I see, 50$ per year soon. Bugger that for a pint of fish

it's not really, I signed up andI'm still wondering why. If you have a business I guess it's good to use as a common webmail app but for your domain, also sharing gdocs etc.

What is it useful for though?

If you wanted to register a free Google Apps account you can hook up your domains to (ie. for email) - it's probably the last call, Google took the free service off the main apps page www.google.com/a
This article has a link to free account registration, still working:
