You're from Denver? Are you serious? You guys are a bunch of pussies. I've been to Denver enough to know that. You guys are just people from Boulder that cover up their gay flair.

I think its alot easier to be a poser when you skateboard. While skateparks can be a little crowded, there really isnt anyone calling you out for being a total kook. As long as you rock the board and an oversized neon shirt & beanie no one is going to say anything.
Like I said before. Anyone who thinks they are part of a counter culture is just taking up space by being a deadbeat. You have to be particularly spoiled and apathetic in order to buy into such a stupid ideal.
I don't care if your a cross dressing tranny. The only thing that makes you respectable skater surfer or whatever, is your dedication and your attitude.
The funny thing about Nike being totally fake and materialistic, is that their tagline Just do it pretty much sums up the attitude that any athlete should adhere to. Just cut the bullshit, ego, and prissy attitude and do whatever your going to do.

I've never been able to skate or blade worth a damn. I respect the guys that have the time, patience, guts and thick skin to pull off some of the amazing moves they do.
It's the same for any sport though. If you love it, practice hard and are good at what you do all power to ya.
I train as much as possible in karate – my favourite sport/passion whatever you want to call it. I've dislocated fingers and toes, my right hip goes out regularly but I just keep on going. That is the essence behind hardcore anything isn't it????
If Nike makes good boards - ride 'em. If they don't, don't. If the kicks are comfy and last they'll do well, and if they don't they improve or fade away.
Try doing your shopping on the way home from a few hours of hard training or teaching wearing a white gi (pyjamas for the novice). The thing that changes perceptions is when someone is bashed outside and I calmly walk out ready to help, and if the trouble is gone I take charge of the first aid.
Work Hard, Play Hard and help out when needed.
I don't care if some one calls me a pyjama mama or whatever. If they really wanted to step up they'd learn a lesson or two (hopefully without me having to resort to actually throwing a strike or punch).
Oh, and if you're a nerd - Live long and prosper.
