Hi all,
How good is Skype on an iPhone, I am thinking of getting rid of my landline and using having skype constantly running on the iPhone for people to contact me via my SkypeIn number.
Just wanna get rid of my landline?

Skype voice calls only work over wifi but that may change in OS 3.0. Also you won't be able to run Skype in the background until 3.0. The call quality is great though and actually usable compared to Fring (another skype supported app)

works fine here,
I actually use it more then the desktop to make calls, sometimes its slow but it depends of the wifi you're connecting to

hi all,
I don't have an iPhone yet, hopefully getting one on Friday, just wanted to check if was a viable replacement for the landline.
@ ephix re: 0S 3.0 has there been any talk of skype using anything but wi-fi yet?
@ GeorgesII can you use any wi-fi connection, i.e. can I use my home?

The iphone could very well be a replacement for a landline, its like any mobile phone so it just depends on what your budget is and what tariff you get from the network. A landline, I imagine, would be more cost effective though in the long run.
skype can be used on any wifi but theres currently no push notification which means you would have to have skype running all the time to receive calls (if you were plannign on using that in the main to make and receive calls).

Land-line free since 2003.

as i understand it At&t has made a move to block use of skyp over the 3g network....i believe some lawsuits are in litigation. But i believe jail broke phones can use it over the 3g.

iamjustoneman. the current official betas of OS 3.0 do allow calls on 3G data, but this may be a bug that is fixed on the final. bit of a wait and see.

i have used skype on my iphone and its pretty good quality etc, bit of a pain for typing though if its not a voice chat.
yeah the bad thing is that the app won't run in the background.
thats interesting about os3 :)

AT&T won't allow Skype to run off 3G as it will be a huge drain on their network. Personally I feel that Skype is useless on the iPhone to anyone who doesn't make international calls, as all calls on the iPhone are basically free anyway.
- basically I am thinking more about people who getting in touch with a landline, not everyone wants to get in touch with a mobile, so I wanted skype mainly for the landline numberiamjustoneman
