Weird criteria... my girlfriend's father & younger sister (13 or so) are visiting. Need suggestions for eating. He'll want to pay by default, they both like french & thai, but the place should be a bit more "hip", youthful & lively.. but affordable so he's not terrified.
Suggestions?

might be tough to find a hip place that's affordable. iunno- try menupages.com
- By hip I mean a little more exciting for a 13 yr oldkult

Landmark in Tribeca (not the midtown one) is always solid, very good french food and a great space/crowd!
- Yep, I'm a fankult

Nothing fancy, but Republic in Union Sq. is cheap and kinda "hip". Maybe Nooch too.

Sea — Thai Bistro [in Brooklyn]
This place has a pretty cool atmosphere, great food at a nice price- OOPS, completely wrong link, here you go: http://www.menupages…nRIK
- SEA in B'town has fantastic food.blackfrancis
- it's "decent", but really subpar as far as thai is concerned.Point5
- Sea has terrible table service. I stopped going there years ago. If you want Sushi/Thai go to Planet Thailand.********
- SEA is lame. a little factoid for ya, SEA is where they shot the asian restaurant scene for the movie garden state. maybe you'll see zach braff there.oblib
- I hate that placejoseprieto

ninja. when you enter, a ninja asks you "do you want to go the regular way or the ninja way?". you go through caves to get to your table, get stabbed with wooden swords, and ninjas pop out and scare you while you eat throughout the night. her father will fucking worship you.
http://www.ninjanewyork.com/- ...unless he has a bad heart, in which case the dinner will be quite short, and you'll spend most of your night in the ERarmsbottomer
- i've always wanted to check this place out. i hear the theatrics are crazy dope, but the food falls short.oblib
- it's those damn ninjasCGN

First of all, you should check out the reviews on Yelp.com. This site is the place to look when you are confused about restaurants. If I were you, I would take them to a French restaurant called Balthazar. My girl and I have been for brunch, dinner, and always see someone famous. Jules on St. Marks is also a good place, and parent-proof.
I agree with arms on NINJA, that place is a circus (but it is not thai). The best Thai in NY is Sea or Joya (both on Brooklyn but worth the trip).- omg as a new yorker who lives in brooklyn, SEA is by far one of the worst in nyc.e-pill
- goto Thai Pavillion in Astoria on 30th ave.e-pill
- i guess for tourists SEA must be like visiting disneyland...e-pill
- i like how they used Sea as the ridiculous "LA restaurant" in GardenState.Douglas
- SEA is good for delivery, I actually haven't been to the restaurant.bump79

I've been going since 2000, its a decent Japanese place with a wide selection. No sushi or rolls, just good skewers and a ton of other dishes.
- ls good, but be prepared to eat all chicken parts. 13 yr old might not dig itTheBlueOne

The kids love MARS 2112!!!!!! ( http://www.mars2112.com )
Kidding aside... August ( http://www.augustny.com ) is one of my favorite places for special occasions. And if money is no object, One If By Land ( http://www.oneifbyland.com ) is really nice but also very romantic, the beef wellington is insane.

^ My friend took a bunch of us to MARS 2112 years ago. We were out drinking and a few of us wanted to get something to eat. So he starts talking about this amazing restaurant over by where he works... I was speechless when we went in. I was so drunk I didn't know whether to throw up from the psychedelic sitaution or to just order the chicken fingers and fries. The people that worked there looked so fuckin miserable.
