Decent road bike for under £500

Other than being afraid of your gears breaking, I'm still at a loss for why a fixed gear bike has any advantage over a bike with gears and brakes.

I was interested in this thread as well. But I am going to punt for a mountain bike... Mainly due to the fact that everyt now and again I like to go camping/riding around the New Forest.
I suppose to find a happy medium would be quite difficult.

Are helmets entirely necessary?
In the past I've never bothered with one. I've always had the opinion that no-helmet, means I'm more attentive..
I guess I'm being stupid?

Are helmets necessary? I use to say no, but my mind was changed a year ago. I know someone who's life was saved by a helmet. They were hit from behind by a car, and ended flying over it, and landing on their back. The helmet was destroyed, i mean it was missing a grapefruit sized chunk. With out it he would be dead, no question. He broke a bone in his back, but his head and neck were fine.

I like that specialized, good choice. despite being aluminum it's a pretty comfortable ride.
