Deleting fonts in Vista

Even logged in as Administrator I can't delete some fonts. Anyone experienced this? I've checked some forums but couldn't implement the solutions therein.
I'm not talking about fonts within the windows/fonts folder - I'm talking about ttf files in personal folders and drives. Vista just doesn't allow you to delete them, apparently. Crazy.
Anyone got a solution for this?

Are you sure you're not trying to remove some of the system fonts?
Curious where these fonts are located....just to be sure...you are trying to remove fonts in a personal folder other than the Windows "font" folder? Where are they located exactly?
Yes Vista has a safe mode you could try (press F8 while booting) and delete them this way.

Need more info to help you....
Where exactly are these fonts you are trying to remove?
Are they active (can you currently use them)?
Are you using any type of font management tool?

Well - fresh news:
1. I have a ...user/desktop/new_fonts folder. That's where I put all the new fonts I get. I can delete any compressed font files. It just doesn't allow me to delete *.ttf files.
2. Just after I posted this thread I remembered I could go into DOS and try to delete the ttf file with a plain command. good idea.
3. From DOS, I managed to delete all ttf files (even logged in as user) in the folder but not those which I had previously installed.
So my guess is, after you've install a font, you can't delete it's copy no matter what folder you're in.

I'll try safe mode now.

Glad you almost got it...so any fonts that you have installed previously your unable to remove from your personal "new_fonts" folder?
If safe mode doesn't work I would try and login as "administrator" or change the file permissions for each font (or maybe the whole folder) and give "full control" to "everyone"...should work.
- yes. It seems after you've installed a font you're in for a lot of trouble to delete the original file.Corvo2

just got another idea. I'll try to rename the file and see how that goes.

And this is why Macs suck.

For the record,
1. on Vista, you can delete ttf files under in any directory with a simple DOS command: del [fontname].ttf
2. on Vista, you can't delete ttf files even under DOS if the font is installed, nor even if you rename the file in a different folder.

What pisses me off about fonts in windows is that it uses the same fucking font installer from 3.1. Unbelieavable! That's one thing I do like about OS X.

If you installed the fonts then windows is not going to let you delete the font files, that would break whatever program was trying to access the font you deleted. Basically once the fonts are installed they belong to the "system" and not the "user", it's a safety feature people not a bug =)
First you need to uninstall the fonts through the Control Panel -> Fonts. Just select whatever fonts you want to remove and press delete (or drag to the recycle bin). AFTER that you can go ahead and delete the files if you want...
hope that works =) if it doesn't, pls post a screen cap of the Properties/Security/Permissions for Admin of one of the files you can't delete... and also, what exact error message are you getting?
cheers!

How about getting Suitcase?
- Corvo20
Well I restarted under safe mode. It worked. I was able to delete the file. Thanks everyone.
Thank you zarkonite, too, but I was trying to delete a font (a copy) without having to un-install it from the system. I'm sure what you've said will work.
But rebooting under safe mode seems like the best, fastest procedure, as far as I gather - and it works.
Thank you all for your support. All. Props.
- Actually, the fastest procedure would be font management software, as eating_tv pointed out above.monospaced
- I will check it. TY mono.Corvo2
- I'm not that guy with the latest software installed all the time.Corvo2
- Corvo20
But I'll check the permissions, zarko. ty.

I agree, suitcase or any font manager is the way to go.
- Corvo20
I'll definitely look into it.
Thanks.
