Youre all a bunch of crazy bastards. Stop whining.
For those who got the Iphone 3G a year or less ago, Apple and AT&T are probably waiting for that contract to be up. ITs possible that Iphone 3gs is just between Iphone 3g and 4g or or 3gs2 or whatever.
Just be patient, the phone upgrade is better but think about it, Iphone 3G sales were huge for apple, and you had to buy a two year contract, the smart thing to do is to bring out a better phone at the end of those two year contracts, so that Apple keeps those customers, AT&T keeps those customers, and everyone is happy.
THEN you think about opening up the earlier versions of the phones to the other phone companies (dont keep it proprietary) and you dominate the market.

the day they switch to verizon i will buy one. hopefully soon.
until then it's just the touch and a separate phone that works.

The cheap price of the iPhone is an impression based on SUBSIDIZED prices. The reason the iPhone was ever cheap is because you were paying for part of the savings in your service contract over the two years. AT&T can't just discount expensive phones repeatedly without recouping the cost.
- i rather pay more than 2 years contract... with no mms and tethering.pango

im happy with my first gen....

I don't think half of you understand what 3G actually is. It's not something that apple can just increate the number and it magically becomes faster. It's a technology that's beyond their control, and sticking arbitrary letters on the end doesn't make it any better.
If they wanted to use something faster and better that ACTUALLY EXISTS, they should have opted for 3.5g which nokia have been using for quite sometime.

ALL THE CORP. SUCK!

tmobile in the netherlands doesnt even offer u to upgrade
they say you can pass your contract down to someone else if you want to upgrade

You can get the new 3GS for $199 if you extend your contract for another two years.

Doesn't seem bad to me. The price for upgrading a phone inside of a contract is the same as this, there is no discount (and a massive markup, for any carrier).
ATT has been better than Verizon, as far as reception, where I travel.
I am out of contract, so I can get the new 32gb for less than I paid for my first gen, so I am happy :-)
- Same here. It's why I'm not as upset as these guys.********
- I had a Verizon work phone and the reception was horrid. Then the switched over to Sprint which was laughable...********
- because with Sprint no one could get a signal in the building. LOL. That didn't go over too well with the CEO.********

I figured it out. Remember when Apple released the first iPhone, and people paid $499 for the 8GB model. I do.
Then remember when Apple released the 3G version, for less than half the price and people went crazy buying the things and everyone who paid full-price for the 1st gen were like "hey, wtf....". I do.
Then remember when everyone started selling their 3G jailbroken iPhones on eBay for $500+, the very same ones that they purchased for $199 a few months before? Apple does.
Now Apple is sticking it to those guys and we all have to suffer.
Correction. Everyone with a 3G phone has to suffer.

"Everyone with a 3G phone has to suffer"
If you call living without a compass, yet another poor phone camera (get a real camera FFS!) and voice commands suffering...I think you'll find the real reason is people who have a 3G are still paying for their phones, you got it subsidised with a 2 year contract that means the contract goes towards paying for the phone.
If they let you get a 3GS cheap they would be losing money.Wait till next year there will be an upgrade price iPhone for 3G customers (3GS will suffer) and it will kick the shit out of iPhone 3G .5
