Its been a little while since I have had to work on a project where the client wanted to monetize a content based site. If the traffic is there, is Adwords still worth doing, or should we be looking at other ad networks/options.
Any recent experience?

consumers will pay for nothing, and google adsense will make you pennies if your are lucky

Need to coordinate site content with the advertising.
Make sure the ads offer something that your average user would actually find interesting given the rest of the content on the page.
A lot depends on the genre of the site. Some types of things are obviously a lot easier to monetize than others.

if a subculture site, possibly a sponsorship of a section by a major industry player in that subculture, otherwise unlikely $..

What ukit said and I'd have a look around affiliate sites like Commission Junction where you can select targeted quality ad's.
It's also worth looking at websites for sale on sites like Site Point where you can see what money is being made by what site etc with different advertising streams with proof of income. There is an awful lot of crap there but some interesting real world websites too from time to time: http://marketplace.sitepoint.com…
