HTML WTF?

Right, that's it. I know absolutely nothing about building a website, so I've decided to get my learning cap on and get cracking.
Now it seems to me I should learn HTML before I start tinkering around with Flash, so...
What books would you recommend that would take me from the very beginning of learning HTML?

seriously,, their tutorials are probably your best bet for starting from zero.

Download a template website and figure things out by process of elimination. The best way to learn code is to dive straight in. HTML, XHTML and CSS are quite forgiving when implementing. Usually something works when writing it.

start by picking apart templates, starting from scratch is a bit rough.

Yeah and don't start with anything dynamic like indexhibit (because you'll need to get your head round php and mysql as well), just do some simple static html pages...
