So...by my username....you may have guessed metal isn't usually my thing
however...I got the new Mastodon after hearing so much about it here and I can't stop listening
anything else in this vein I should check out?
Thanks in advance
ps...I know all about slayer & maiden & the like from wayback...anything new & great?

I just recently started listening to them too, good stuff.

Well, the new Mastodon is pretty atypical and something special, so to just randomly rec. some new metal stuff specifically is difficult, but...
In a similar vein to Mastodon, try Minsk:
I've also been grooving on the heavy, sludgy sounds of Misery Speaks:

Another band I've been digging tremendously is Cloudkicker, which is an instrumental outfit, more Meshuggah than Mastodon by a country mile, but you can download their two albums for free here:

Isis, Amesoeurs, Meshuggah, and friend of a friend's band Aghora all have recent stuff you might like.
- ^But pretty much, you can refer to TBO since I haven't been keeping up on my metal enough latelyismith
- but ismith has got the porn site recs locked down cold I saw..TheBlueOne

Although these bands don't sound like Mastodon, these are some essential metal albums IMHO.
Sleep - Sleep's Holy Mountain
Agoraphobic Nosebleed - Agorapocalypse
Leviathan - Massive Conspiracy Against All Life
Drudkh - Blood In Our Wells
Weakling - Dead As Dreams
GREENMACHiNE - D.A.M.N.
Pig Destroyer - Terrifyer
Boris - Vein

Digging through my mp3 player for other recs ofr you, Neurosis:

And definitely Barroness:

And, although not as stoner/prog metal as most of these acts, just pickup the new Gojira disc too. Even on first listen you hate it, it'll grow on you and then you'll realize what an amzing fucking band they are. Besides when you have a french metal band who are deep environmentalists with incredible art direction producing great metal, well, you gotta support 'em:

What makes Crack the Skye so great is that nothing else sounds like it.
My other favorite releases thus far this year are Lamb of God's "Wrath", Isis' "Wavering Radiant" My Dying Bride's "For Lies I Sire", and Heaven and Hell's "The Devil You Know".
Each of these for the same as the Mastodon—very unique sound, precisely executed.
Two other albums I've been playing the death out of (haha!) are Wolves in the Throne Room's "Black Cascade" and The Ransack's "Vortex". Not in the same league as the first bunch, but I really dig them.
- I simply cannot get into WITTR, and I've tried. I appreciate the arty-ness of it all though..TheBlueOne
- LOG's new one is great as well..but way more traditional post-hardcore groove metalTheBlueOne
