If you think about it, the whole concept of UI is just a crutch because of the limitations of technology. A good UI reduces the "interface" part as much as possible, i.e., makes what you want to accomplish easier.
Therefore at some point in the future when UI designers have totally achieved their goal...there will be no need for them.

That's the same argument you could use for type design. The best body fonts should essentially be invisible so that only the meaning of the words is processed by the reader. The vessel is invisible.
You still need a master craftsman to create it so that it is invisible. Same with UI.

well, for as long as they haven´t invented direct brain access to the plexi you´ll need some kind of interface, which better will be designed by someone who knows the trade. and even, when you can plug your very Self into the net, you´ll probably still need some kind of structure, enabling access to the alternative reality, however it may look like. somebody will build that. s. ghost in the shell, snowcrash, blablablalblablab
