A logo and site I had done Pro-bono because I really liked what they were doing and wanted to somehow be apart of it.

The map idea is good, as are the signs for the main areas of the site. However, those signs could be smaller. Maybe keep the Xylofolks sign the same size and in the same place, then shrink the remaining signs and put those next to it in a line, with the "beautiful day" tagline box filling up the space under them so that all that is in a fairly solid block on the top.
The problem with the map being used in this way is it draws my eye. i wanna look at the map and the links in the black boxes are distracting me. Maybe figure out some way to replace some of the nodes or signposts or whatever on the map with these links in a way that's obvious, but still integrated with the map.

I like the site, but it took me a while to work out who these guys are. I think it would almost work better if you had the 'about page' first; the current landing page isn't strictly necessary imo.
I agree about the contrast - it is a bit of an assault on the eyeballs -> but then, I also think that it's the initial landing page where this is worst. Get rid of that page and I think all will be well.
The news links which are currently linked on the first page, could easily be moved to multimedia -> and having the nav buttons along the top on every page makes the site more consistent and easier to use.
