I just finished reading this guy's book. I worked with him at a conference last May. He flew 3 times, and was in the program during both shuttle disasters. The book, didn't go through the 'NASA approval process' and is written like your having a beer with him at a bar.
"T+ 8:00 Minutes - The G-forces hit 3, and the main engines throttle back to maintain that acceleration. With nearly an empty fuel tank the engines now have the muscle to overstress the machine and rupture itself. ...20,000 feet per second... 21,000 feet per second... 22,000 feet per second... Every 15 seconds we were going another 1,000 miles per hour faster."
