It's pretty dead downtown on a Sunday.
And to add to others time estimates, I would plan for an hour each way to the airport on CTA. And lately the Blue Line (train that goes to O'Hare) has been closed on the weekend, forcing people to use a shuttle instead.

Not aware of any open rooftops, but If you want a good view get lunch and drinks in the Hancock Building. Drinks aren't cheap, but it beats paying $20 for an elevator ride in the Sears Tower.

Too bad Tree Studios isnt all residences anymore, Great place to hang out. Had a great Bastille day party every year too...

My wife and I had a 10hour, overnight layover in OHare earlier in the year. We phoned a friend who lives there and they gave us specific instructions involving the blue line and a specific pizza place, but asking the airport people they said we couldnt get back into the main terminal, and would have to stay out in the other bit, and not be able to get thru security in time for our 6am flight.
So we just wandered around. Slowly. Taking a nap on some nice big chairs here, trying to find somewhere at 3am that sold food or coffee - endlessly going up and down the fantastic trippy travellator between the terminals - you konw - the one with all the neon, and the echo music. Popped some strong pain meds and rode up and down that for about an hour and a half...la de la...it was lovely, just chatting to people, slouching against the hand rain and stumbling at the ends. Met a real friendly cop.
Would loved to have busted out into the city itself, I got a real nice genuine vibe from all the natives working there.
The time passed almost soon enough and we were gone. Pain-free and unbored. Thanks, Chicago, we will come back and visit for real. And spend $1000 at L20 on seafood and saki :)
