WTF, I just found out that the ad agency I work for is charging clients $100/hr for creative/design work. No wonder why we're tanking and salaries have been cut. I charge that rate (and more depending on job) on my freelance jobs out of my fuckin' 10x10 lil office at home.

flat rate for all creative‽
every agency ive been at had a sliding scale from jr designer up through CD.
- ha! yet all jobs end up being done by the same person...and it's not the CD! ;)OSFA
- fact. but what the client doesnt know wont hurt them.baseline_shift

maybe that's what they charge for a designer's time (which is obviously incredibly low), but it's possible they make up for it in other hourly rates/fees such as project management, development, etc.
- no. trust me, it's not so. I've continued this discussion and these other "fees" don't exist. We're laughing/crying right now.Point5

$100/hour is LOL.
We charge $210 here for entry-level interactive design, and we're not exactly in the best market to be charging those kinda rates.....

I'm pretty sure it's a flat fuckin rate. I'm in shock right now. This all came up after a discussion with our acct rep who said a client was upset that we sent a $1200 estimate for a logo design and they threatened to use someone else who was only going to charge $900! HAHAHA... we're talking about a major casino on the Strip. Times are tough eh?

Tis pretty low for an agency.
A few years ago I was mistakenly included in an email with an attached Excel spreadsheet with what this agency (one of my freelance clients) was charging for the entire creative dept. Some of the CD's rates were at $300 p/hr, some AD's $200 p/hr...mind you that's what the agency was charging the client, not what those positions were being charged to the agency. The next year I raised my hourly rates and they had no problem with it. This agency is also one of the top agencies in the world. A major agency network.
Goes to show you what the big guns are charging clients.

if there are no other fees associated the company wouldn't even be in business. as an agency it would be impossible to cover salaries, benefits, rent, utilities, etc. on $100/hr - so there must be more going on behind the scenes

Maybe their logic was to charge half the industry standard rate, and take twice as long (work slow) to make up for it?

$100 per hour for design work is way too low for any agency with more than a couple employees to stay in business. I know veteran solo designers who charge $100 per hour, for crying out loud.
$1,200 for a logo? Dude. I charge considerably more than that for a logo, unless it's a major friend/family discount which is made clear from the get-go—and I'm a one-man shop. I live in St. Louis, which is no high-rolling town by any standards. Most design firms and agencies around here wouldn't touch a logo for less than $5,000. New York or SF? try $10,000, even in these lean times.

This is insane, I'm still shaking my head. Time to dust off the resume, methinks. It sounds like your employers' days are numbered with these Michael Scott rates. You ready to work out of a utility closet?
