I was given an iphone by a client quite a while back. Today I decided that I should start using it properly (currently use it as a mobile diary) and I have gone to change providers. I have now been offered a ridiculously good contract by my current provider. So I was thinking of now not changing and jailbraking the phone.
What are your own experiences of a jailbroken phone? Will I still be able to use iTunes?
Will my current network data connection work?

Itunes still works & your data/internet will work but you will be charged your standard network rate per kb download. Saying that a lot of networks are offering unlimited/free data pack as standard now.

YEah the deal is £17.50 per month. unlimited Data included

That's a decent deal - who's your provider?

Vodafone

I am not a high usage user:
250mins per month
100txts
18 months

So real disadvantages then?
Would I still be able to use the apps that I have?

You can still use the apps as well as install any jailbreak apps too. Just if you update the firmware at any point you'll need to jailbreak it all over again once they developers have released a new jailbreaking app. Also unlimited data generally has small print on it, i.e. fair usage policy.

Yeah I guessed as much (about the fair usage). I only need it so I can receive email all the time and potentially use maps and the odd other app.

Well I have gone with Vodafone. Ended up offering me: £15 per month, 500mins, 100txts, 18mnths.
14 day cool off if I can't get the iphone to work.

Works fine on mutiple providers - check the link below. It's really easy:

I never used my iPhone without it as mine is an US import.
Just make sure you don't update your firmware when iTunes prompts you to. Also, new big firmware update comes in June/July - not sure if there would be a jailbreak for that version as Apple gets smarter with locking the phones. My next iPhone will be an import from a country where there's a provider who officially unlocks the phones - I think Belgium, Poland, Hong Kong. This way it'll still be unlocked after every firmware update.
