art direction has a modern/retro vibe.
i'm lost where to go with this. serif or sans? anyone know if there is factual proof that one is easier to learn from and read.
and fonts suggestions in either direction. i want big and round. i've been looking at something like Clarendon for retro serif or Bookman for a little more schoolhouse. or do i just go ultra clean sans like Gotham book. or maybe there's a Humanist i should look into for best legibility?
any help? suggestions?

ftr,
arno prints and reads so well while it may not be "childish" it is a very easily read and beautifully printed text/reading typeface

Use cursive, lots of cursive

i'd go with a sans for younger kids.
my 3 year old has trouble identifying serifs because i think they confuse the forms of the letters in his mind. you need a simple form with little ornamentation for smaller readers.
now if it's for an older kid, one that already can read, i doubt it's of any real importance, so just go with what you think is aesthetically pleasing/stylistically consistent
- Yup, my 3 year old is the same way. They are still learning, they don't need to be confused by the likes of serifs :)designbot

clarendon is a pretty popular one for kids books, what age is this book aimed at? how much text are we talkin? whats it about? could something themed work?

i also like Bookman but have been grilled in the past for suggesting it... is it really that bad? i feel like it'd be appropriate for a kid's book.

actually i think i've narrowed it down to a simple sans, big and open like Gotham... now just checking my options for rounded styles such as mau's Gravostyle above, Gotham Rounded, Bryant etc.
Really liking this one, FF Speak (minus the ligatures)
