My professor, Dan Ibarra from Aesthetic Apparatus, discusses his feelings for Susan Boyle:
By now I assume (or if your aunt is on the internet at all) you have already witnessed Susan Boyle’s “moving performance” on ‘So you think you’ve got talent?’ I watched it and I’ll admit that it was very beautiful. She is an amazing singer (I hope I didn’t ruin the surprise for you) but fuck this groundswell of emotional support that she’s receiving. By being impressed by her performance it seems to me like we’re implying that we should first always assume that ugly people have no talent and be surprised and moved when they actually do. I’d have preferred people be impressed by her ability alone and not have her homeliness be such a huge reason to believe in her. Honestly, I’m much more impressed when “beautiful people” have actual talent. (“Wow, Brad Pitt is actually a really GOOD actor!”)
[end quote]
I couldn't agree more.

I've known lots of ugly women who could sing well. And there have certainly been lots of ugly guys who could sing well, too. Luciano Pavarotti being only one of the most obvious ugly people who've made grand careers from singing. But, you know, Ethel Merman, Sammy Davis jr., Ella Fitzgerald, etc., etc.
But part of the emotional appeal of Susan Boyle is that she's guileless, style-less, and impoverished too, right? I mean, in the film clip she's dressed like a charwoman, right, with a rat's nest for hair?

And, too, there have been famous people who've been nearly bereft of talent and looks who have succeeded. Like Tony Bennett. Can't hold a goddam tune, and looks like a shoe salesman with a bad wig.
And certainly there have been people whose success was greatly helped by their looks. David Bowie, Beyonce, Dean Martin, Paula Abdul, etc., etc.
- Bowie is a multitalented and charismatic genius (composer, singer, musician, songwriter, actor, painter).raf

she is being played and she doesn't even know it (or maybe she does). There are tons of folks that can sing like that, and now she is being marketed for her ugliness. Bravo, to the execs. They are brilliant and slithery.
The industry is all about the complete package. Not saying everyone has to be 10s, but at least have some redeemable quality. It will always be that way.

hey, remember him?
Fat.
Unnattractive
Not a Professional Singer.
Judges act like they've never heard him sing before (when in actuality to MAKE IT on to tv, the singers have to go through about 4 rounds.)
Blows crowd out of the water - becomes media hit - viral superstar.

Tell Dan he has great art.

Potts was better... it seemed more about his insecurity than attractivness. It was a much more moving story than "you're ugly, but yet you can sing"... agree, the focus seems on the wrong thing.
It's a shame to think how many people have real talent but may be left out becuse of things like this.

I think the biggest part of it is that she's confessed that she lives alone with her cats, has never married, never been kissed. And, of course, she comes across as such a loveable character, even though most people find her to be incredibly unattractive.
I just watched the video for the first time, out of curiosity, and thought she did a great job. Could you muster up the courage to sing in front of all those people who were basically all against you? Probably not.
Sure, she'll be forgotten in a year, by most at least. But for now I think she should have her fifteen minutes. You never know, she might just make it. I know of plenty people in my family who would probably buy her records, people who really don't give a fuck what she looks like.
- She will be most likely on Broadway. I think she will find a home there.morilla

interesting phenomenon this--(impeccable capitalist causality!) but alas, your 'professor dan from aesthetic apparatus' argues flatly an overdetermined point.

Television is not real. Reality shows are scripted. The Susan Boyle scenario was conceived in a board room long before they found Susan Boyle to play the part.
Shouldn't this be obvious by now?

nb is right. It boggles my mind that people on a forum crowded by media and advertising experts take all that crap like civilians.
It gets worse, they trust politicians as well.
