Tiger uppercut.
Or... if you have AppleCare, get Apple to fix it. Or get them to fix it anyway if it's under a year old.

I had the exact same problem a few weeks ago. Was starting to get a little worried. I opened up the ram compartment, took both sticks out and put them back in and from then on it boots up fine.

That click-click-click-claaack-click sound is fashion moving on without you. You should feel obliged to buy another one.

Just read you had it resolved. I wish I were so lucky...
Macbook hangs on above mentioned gray screen, accompanied by the menacing "click-click-click-claaack-click... sound...

Hard drive failure, nothing more, nothing less.
Happened to my wife's Macbook this weekend.
Leave it off, do not keep trying to turn it on to attempt to resolve. The HD most likely has corrupt sectors.

login as single user: reboot then hold apple-s.
then type: /sbin/fsck -fyPress Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issue is found:
** The volume (name_of_volume) appears to be OK
If fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message:
***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****

If it is within a year you definitely have Applecare.

Looks like you may have to do a "restore in place" from the DVD...
