So this is nothing new, but I have never known the real reason: why are so many logos fuzzed out in tv shows? Ex: my gf was watching that real housewives show yesterday, and a womans Mac laptop had the logo blurred out. Why is this? Do they need to pay companies to show their logos? If they already own it, shouldn't it be OK to do it? Or, isn't it free advertising for a company? Or would some companies not want their product associated with a certain show?
Would love an answer. Wonder about this all the time.

I think it has a bit to do with each issue you mentioned above. Probably a lot to do with associations.

no free advertising.

It's just so prevalent now-more so in the reality show, non sitcom realm. I don't remember it being as noticeble all over before. Maybe I'll write the question into Parade. That's where all the clueless old folks go to get stuff answered!

free advertising. also liability issues as the show doesn't want to seem to be partnered or endorsing another company. could also be a competitor. imagine if a show distributed by sony had a shot of an hp or apple laptop?

It looks fucking ridiculous - if it's an instantly obvious one like starbucks coffee or an apple computer then it just serves to highlight that brand and implies a negative relationship between the program being show and that brand, and if it's not obvious what the brand is then it just looks like the program is trying to hide something from the viewer, in the style of a censor, and it damages the credibility of the program brand. It pisses me off - brands need to just grow up and realise that if they put their mark on an object, then really it's going to be out of their control who sees it and under what cirumcstances. Public is public, be it on tv or out in the street, so either have the grace to make a product that doesnt have your logomark splattered all over it, which - incidently also pisses me off as it turns everything everyone owns into a constant fucking advertisement, OR just stfu about it.
