Why, coz 2 look ugly and a little amateurish. Doesn't inspire anything. Doesn't wanna me click anywhere.
The advantage of 2 over 1 is that you can browse the content way faster. When I look at sites like #1 I feel like stopping all activities for that moment of the day to get up make some coffee and cream, sugar maybe a croissant too... head back to the computer, roll up my sleeves and stretch a little and say to myself "ok, let's get started" and I star clicking away every link not knowing what I am gonna see.

I would have to go with number 1 as well. The reason that I am not keen on number 2 is that there is way to much wasted space on the page and feel everything just floats off and there is no real focus on what to do or where to go IMO. Maybe move the archives bit over to the left and the move the mailing listbox to the top or under the mailing list box.
With the content in the middle, have you tried adding 2 or 3 listings next to each other? That may look good.

Go for number 1 - it's built around a standard portfolio prototype a la indexhibit that everyone knows and understands which makes getting to the content really easy.

with #1 i immediately know what it is. in the upper left it says zines and underground press. then there is a huges number of thumbnails showing printed things. and a list with links. so i get what it is immediately. to VectorMasked point, yes, it is a lot of point and click but #2 is like scroll scroll scroll and i really dont know what i am looking at for all that scrolling....how much, what is it exactly, something to do with a press...
