I would have to go with number 1 as well. The reason that I am not keen on number 2 is that there is way to much wasted space on the page and feel everything just floats off and there is no real focus on what to do or where to go IMO. Maybe move the archives bit over to the left and the move the mailing listbox to the top or under the mailing list box.
With the content in the middle, have you tried adding 2 or 3 listings next to each other? That may look good.
