Since when did Google ever start caring about design? Their logo, brochures and website are visual blight.

^ Absolutely
You would be amazed at the testing they do on these things. They actually have "intelligent overlay software" that analyzes screens, respective color, ad placement, ad size etc. The overlay performs amazing human/user/usage/analytic analysis before pages go live. Ask Jeeves (now called "Ask") is anal about this shit. Whatever.

It's like the robot replacing the designer on the assembly line. Testing 41 shades of blue- You get a spike in the results for shade 28, and then it's summer, and everyone likes warmer colors. "What's everyone's favorite color to click who uses the internet?" Do you test everyone in the world? Are you adjusting for user swells? New cultural cross-sections that join the growing mass of internet users? What about the *points gun at Marissa Mayer and fires*
Is it the end of an era where the human ego stops creating for it's own sake, and chases another one's tail for the answer on what to make? We're gonna be one big daisy chain of ego ourobori.
- that's the future, I'm glad you hate it. Just wait for Adobe to release software for thisPupsipu

So do they have monkeys in front of computers clicking away to determine the best shade of blue?
- Well f*ck, secret's out now. Can't you keep your damn mouth shut!ETM
- did uber just say something funny? well, fuck me.TheBlueOne
- Whoa, whoa. Lets not get carried away. It was amusing at best.ETM

no they'll do something like have a huge testing facility where all the results are plugged directly into their design.
fuck where the world is going. things were so much more beautiful when the single mind got to make a creative decision.
- There will be special software to satisfy your particular desiresPupsipu

the funny thing is that google has people fooled into believing that they're a good company.

You have to separate usability from visual design. Google builds some of the best web apps in terms of a) technology b) ease of use. Compare Gmail to Yahoo Mail or Hotmail in terms of UI. It is far more streamlined and easy to use and there are some new ideas in there that were adopted by competitors. Google Maps - another example of something that was completely new and pretty much made Mapquest irrelevant within a day.
Is their visual design ugly and clunky? Sure. But that's more because of their hideous logo than anything else.
By the way, this article about how designers would redesign Google from 2003 is kinda funny. Here's Shephard Fairey's entry:

- That is horrible, shep is no "designer".********

Shepard Fairey
Propagandist, artist, designer
"I wanted to respect the branding and format that Google has established, and therefore I stuck with the structure of its interface to avoid user confusion. I like its simplicity, but I don't like the colors. It needs to encourage more of an emotional attachment with the user. I'm surprised they never thought to turn the o's into an infinity symbol. The number Google is finite, but it's so large that it is infinite for all practical purposes."
- How did Google avoid hiring "designers" like this is amazingPupsipu

I would really like to see their magical Google Analytics Plus with heatmaps, userflow and other minutia overlayed over the design while they're testing out 41 shades of blue.
It's actually not a big deal to test out all these shades, I'm sure they don't ask a designer to make comps for every shade, it's just a script that runs and edits the CSS or some JPG generator. I would do it myself if I was faster with programming.
That's actually what design should be about, testing, editing, adjusting, eye tracking and collecting data. This is design with a particular purpose, it should enable people to complete tasks. Most designers are used to design that mesmerizes people and makes them stupid enough for a short time to buy something.
Unfortunately software for designers is designed for the purpose of designing for advertising, so it's mind numbing to use it for application design and interfaces.

I have a feeling that the most creative department at google is in accounting. "Sure, add a two more zeros to the end of that projected revenue, and make sure to get all of grandmas' retirement savings invested so I we can buy 10 more segways".

they're designing for results. get used it it buddy.

Interface design / UX is totally different than design in the traditional sense. You should know that going into that position. It's not about looks and pretty designs. It's about ease of use and numbers.
I interviewed with them about 1.5 years ago. I think I would have gone mad doing that stuff. It is meant for a totally different type of designer.
