I've been thinking about Portland a lot too. Fortunately I wouldn't need many clients / jobs there since I can work remotely for the clients I have. But it does scare me to think that if I lost a few clients then I might need to hit the open market. :-/

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The nickname "Little Beirut" has stuck to Portland since it was first coined by the staff of former President Bush after violent protests during his visits to Oregon in the early 1990s.
"The generally leftist reputation of the area has grown since the 1960s," said Daniel Pope, a University of Oregon historian and author of a book on radical politics.- not really a big deal... still lots of conservative people in greater OregonSigDesign

Vancouver is only worth it if you enjoy being in the outdoors while still living in a city. The landscape here is beautiful, but the city itself isn't all that great.

Do you like beer? Do you like coffee? Then come to Portland.

Its funny. I took a trip up to Portland thinking I might buy a little craftsman and just hunker down for a few years. I couldn't get over everything looking so depressing... it's like they never got over their 90's ennui.

just moved to Portland a month ago from San Diego via a year in Barcelona. the weather is shit here. no joke. fully depressing... but the coffee and beer are great. rent isn't as cheap as I expected, but pretty reasonable. jobs are scarce. i've managed to find part-time work already and most Portlanders are shocked to hear that.

This is it right here. Vancouver is rad, but if you're not into outdoor activities you might find it a bit boring. It's also super expensive, and the rental housing market is balls.
