I dropped my WD elements 500gb external off a low table (about a foot probably). After that when I tried to mount it I just got weird clicking sound and a sort of beep coming off it, the mac said drive type is unreadable by the computer.
Anyone done this ? Is it worth taking the USB board off and buying a new sata cradle and trying to mount it like that, or do I just bury it at the bottom of the garden or something ?

Make sure you kill it completely or its brothers will come after you.
On a serious note: why don't you just take the casing apart if you're gonna bury it anyways?
You don't need a new box unless you plan to keep it (more safely). But even without it you can try to salvage what was left on the drive with a couple of cables, provided the disk 's not messed up internally.

done exact the same with a WD drive - except not off a table simply from hand to table as I put it down so less than a 6 inch drop. Drive completely screwed. Tried and paid for data recovery services and got nothing from it. I've since bought two portable drives and now back up one with the other. It has really screwed me - even now almost a year on I'm still trying to recreate work I lost on that drive.
Sorry, I'd say not good news for you. I too had the clicking etc.

Always put one in the brain.
take the drive out and pop it in a new case?.....

I had clicking, was a Seagate drive, sent away for data recovery, they wanted 400 GBP to "see if they could recover the info"
It was so expensive because they had to hire "copyrighted tools" to open it.
Bury it.

yeah, if you've written it off put it in the freezer as a last resort. tolerances are so tiny that things get stuck, a little contraction in the freezer will sometimes let things slip back into place. worked on an old ipod i have.
