Bloody hell ,
A cargo plane has crash-landed in high winds at Japan's largest airport, killing both crew members on board.

Whoa crazy. Seems to be a lot of plane crashes as of late.

Oh, that happened today? I saw those images on some shitty Russian site a couple of hours ago and wondered when they were from.
*gulp* poor fuckers :(

^ 5,252 accidents in database / roughly 100 years = 52 crashes p /yr
:O

that stat is only really illuminating if you also factor in teh amount of flights.
number of commercial flights / number of accidents on commercial flights = only stat which reveals anything at all about safety

Clearly, the world revolves around digdre.
You're doomed, sunshine.

example:
after 9/11 a significant number of americans stopped flying, thinking it was safer to drive rather than risk being blown up by terrorists. In the year post 9/11, accidents on american roads rose steeply and more epople were killed as a result of this than as a result of the WTC atrocity. Osama killed more by scaring americans off their safest mode of transport than by flying planes into the towers
- I always loved that statoid.
We're such stupid sheep.Nairn - Not so much sheep, I think it's more of a common reptilian brain similarity myself..TheBlueOne
- Not nice, but a great stat...stem
- yup, we judge risk based on hunter gatherer mechanisms, and its seldom linked to real probability or 'sense'kelpie
- people feel more in control in a car than in a planeelektro
- but they are actually more at risk of a horrible, violent death. Feelings, pah! punt human foolskelpie
- "puny"!!!!!!!! my typing has taken a nose dive recently ;)kelpie
- yeah.. but they are in control and that's all that matters.elektro
- an other fact ; people used to buy SUVs because they feel more robust and controlable, but you have more chance to get killed in an SUV than a carelektro
- get killed in a SUV than a carelektro
- I always loved that statoid.

also, although it seems like there are a lot of crashes happening at the moment and that therefore the risk must be climbing; news affects our sense of risk far more if we are being shown a narrative of similar stories, as the narrative builds we get disproportionately sccared and search out the narrative even more to confirm our fears. Then another narrative will come along (shark attacks maybe, or a killer virus) and we'll forget about this, even if the incident rate stays largely the same. I would like to see if this spike is anything genuinely backed by data, and whether occasionally in the vast universe of probability, these kind of spikes happen all the time with everything

- ive seen that guy.. he can only fly for like 15 seconds... and it makes a load of noiseelektro
- Oh no no no, it runs good, or I wouldn't put my (screen) name on it! :Dharlequino
