- weldedturkey0
was thinking about it – I was there for a business trip recently and fell in love with it. What is the design scene there like, and what are the hot firms?

Sid Lee, Taxi, Cossette, BleuBlancRouge, Marketel, LG2, Cloudraker, Paprika, Draftfcb, BOS, Hue Web...
check out http://Montreal.AD - it's the industry portal for Montreal advertising agencies.

Montreal is a great city. There was a bunch of work there in the nineties but then the bubble burst, so I don't know what scale the operation of the above agencies is anymore. Probably a lot of arts- and cultural-sector work still. The arts and music scene there is very vibrant.
You can get by without French, especially if you're at an american / international agency but you'll be limiting your experience and your potential to move to other places of work. Montrealers are a bit snotty about their French; if you don't don't speak montrealais then they'll assume you're an anglophone, which they're not so hot about, always.

- yeah speaking french is big +
all the firms i have linked are french firms.benfal99 - I'm french-german and I still get attitude when I'm there. Lived there for many years in the nineties until about 2001.pylon
- you have to keep in mind, Quebec is a french speaking country.benfal99
- True, but they only like quebecois-speakers, not necessarily french-french speakers...pylon
- well we are very open-minded. very multi-cultural in here.benfal99
- @benfal99 - I know Quebec likes to THINK they're a country, but you are a French speaking PROVINCE, not country. :)ETM
- a country.ETM
- thanks for the reminder ;-)
benfal99 - ;)ETM
- ETM: correction, there's a MINORITY that likes to think they're a country =)zarkonite
- if you like to think 50% of the population is the minority, well...benfal99
- Well first get your own currency, military, global trade agreements etc. than we'll talk :PETM

I know tons of people that get by just fine in Mtl without french...
my own grandmother never learned english OR french and she's been here for 50+ years! Montreal is a very accomodating city, being a segregationist in Montreal is way too much work: everyone has a different background.
Pylon seems pretty bitter about something =(

I'm an aglo in Montreal, but I'm lucky my french is decent. I work for a big agency, and for sure the language of business is French. It certainly helps to know the language, but if you make a genuine effort, and you have the chops, you can definitely get by.
Zarkonite and Benfall have put together a pretty good list up there. All of them are top-notch design studios / comm. agencies. For interactive, I would add:
http://www.provokat.com
http://www.bluesponge.com (my previous employer)
http://www.nurun.comAside from the studios though, I think Montreal has an amazing and supportive creative community. People just do shit and help each other out. This to me is the best part of this city.
PS. anyone out there ever work for Nolin?

always liked paprika. speaking of canada, whatever happened to Del Terrelonge, or however you spell it?
- pylon0
Haha, I'm not bitter zarko. Just pointing out my experience, mind this was a while ago. I'm still there a few times a year for work and/or visiting friends / family.
I mean only that it's really a french-speaking city and that you'll get more out of it if you can speak it. I'd say the same about Italian and Milan, or where ever.
As an aside, it's funny that Canada is officially a bilingual country yet statistically there's very few bilingual citizens....

not sure, but montreal flourishes off art and design. the modern vs. old world juxtoposition is amazing.
