How many pieces of illustration work would you say is the most beneficial in an online folio?

All of the good ones.

Are you promoting yourself as a designer or an illustrator or both?

So, in your case, 2?

no more than 20 of your best works i would say. it also sort of depends how the site is laid out though of course.

If you put them in order of your best ones (being at the top), it's easier to put more in and not worry as much about length. But if you're doing it by date or alphabetically, it would be best to have a cut-off point.

i'd say no more than 30 absolute tops... with maybe a dozen good pieces being ideal. but that's just coming from my own browsing habits... the more work there is to click through, the faster i do it and the less any of it registers.

Depends on what you aim the folio at. for adequate representation towards clients, buyers, etc.; 1-2 dozen pieces that cover the range of styles is totally ok in my book.
Personally I also enjoy browsing porfolios that offer more than just the self-promo, where people put their whole oeuvre online, like where you can see the progression through the years and so on. Guess it´s a matter of personal taste. If there´s quantity, the site has to be well structured though, so more effort for a reasonable UI. Your old site lacked a little bit in that dpt., if I remember correctly, too much scrolling, too many 1st level navigation items, no overview.
