In 1987, Microsoft adopted its current logo, the so-called "Pacman Logo". The logo was designed by Scott Baker. According to the March 1987 Computer Reseller News Magazine, "The new logo, in Helvetica italic typeface, has a slash between the o and s to emphasize the "soft" part of the name and convey motion and speed."

@kult: The original Apple logo designer worried that the "complete" apple silhouette might be mistaken as a cherry or other fruit. The bite / byte pun was his solution.

it's a pie chart representing "satisfaction"

probably cause it's easier to trademark a tweaked logo.

some kind of defect maybe

Want to know what it means: nothing. Never has, and never was intended to.
It's nothing more than a visual tweak, made to have the mark standout—which it helps it to do.
Some interesting concepts above, thought...
- Scott Baker designed it and my answer above is in the official release from Microsoft.moveinspace

Perhaps connecting the O to the S, representing OS - operating system. Not positive though.

This was the official answer when the logo first came out.

bill gates stabbed it out of steve jobs frustration and the creative director said hey thats great...your a genius AND a designer. Good idea boss.

Figure out what this 'O' is and maybe the new one is a through back to it.

Maybe its something to do with this?
Micro is an English prefix of Greek origin that refers to an object as being smaller than an object or scale of focus, in contrast with macro. It could also be a pacman puking

The incision on the end of the o makes it sound like 'Micr-ow!-soft', which is what businesses exclaim every time there's a new OS release or machine bought.

- I beilve the notch on the B is to take up some of the space between the B and the X... The O fills the last X nicely, and without the notch you would have a weird gap.rosem
- this is so dateduberdesigner

I'm not sure if I agree with an "opening of the o theory"
it could be extending the S to go on top of the O
- adamm0
I think it symbolizes the opening to viruses that there systems are open to.
- I'd love to hear more about this - I've not had a virus on my PC for at least 10 years.Nairn

Update software. Install a free AV just in case. Exercise common sense. *Ta-da!*Nairn - My AV's intercepted things before they've come in (email, etc) - but I'd not've opened that kind of shit anyway.Nairn
