a subject light and a fill for the background

Fill behind the subject? What about the low key effect, easy on the lights or slight underexposure?

You won't get the lighting results from the first image with the 1 light soft box set up posted by ok. There's no fill on him either.
My guess is the model is at least 6-8 feet or more from the background. He's lit by a single light with probably just a little bit of diffusion on it and the light is a decent distance away from the model and up sorta high angled down and far from the right. The light is hitting him and is lighting the background but because of the angle you don't see his shadow and because the background is far enough away it's a couple stops darker than the model.Just a guess though.

I think the photographer on the reference shot used an Octabank and some fill on the oposite side.
- I think the shadows are too sharp and black- I don't think there's any fill.joewigdahlphoto

don't think there's a fill

My guess is a big gridded octabox/bank placed high on camera right 3-4 meters from the subject, and the vignetting effect is done in PS or by a snooted strobe. The shadow behind his head in the picture on the right looks kinda shopped..

My guess is vignette is done in post and there is no fill or reflectors being used. One soft box.

vignette looks pretty post to me too

those photos also could use a tiny bit of hair/rim light
